Form SH-14: Cancelling or Varying a Nomination
Form SH-14 is used to cancel a nomination you have already made, or to vary it. It is simple, but it carries one trap that catches people regularly.
We at ClaimMyFunds regularly find folios where a nomination was cancelled years ago and never replaced, leaving the family with no nominee at all. That is the trap this page is about.
In short
SH-14 cancels or changes an existing nomination on a physical share folio. If you intend to replace the nominee rather than simply remove them, file a fresh Form SH-13 at the same time — otherwise the folio is left with no nominee.
When This Applies to You
- The nominee you appointed has died
- You have divorced or separated and the nominee is your former spouse
- A minor nominee has reached eighteen and you want to update the guardian arrangement
- Family circumstances have changed and a different person should inherit
- You want to remove a nomination entirely and rely on your will instead
Field by Field
What to write in each box, and the entries that most often cause a form to be returned.
What to Attach
- Completed Form SH-14
- A fresh Form SH-13, if you are appointing a replacement
- Self-attested PAN copy of every holder
- Identity proof of the new nominee, where applicable
- Death certificate of the previous nominee, where that is the reason
Where to Send It
Send it to the company's RTA and keep the acknowledgement. Until the RTA processes it, the old nomination remains on record.

Why These Get Rejected
Across the files we handle at ClaimMyFunds, almost every returned form fails for one of these reasons.
How Long It Takes
Indicative timings from cases we have handled. The variable that matters most is whether the file is complete when it arrives.
| Stage | Typical | What affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Complete SH-14, and a fresh SH-13 if replacing | Same day | Treat the two as a pair. |
| Submit both together | 1-3 days | Filing them together avoids any window with no nominee on record. |
| RTA updates the folio | 2-6 weeks | Until processed, the old nomination stands. |
| Confirmation received | Keep it | Along with the earlier acknowledgements, so the sequence of nominations is documented. |
What It Actually Costs
Indicative only. Stamp duty, notary rates and RTA service charges vary by state and by registrar, so treat these as what to budget for rather than a price list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need SH-14 if I just want to change the nominee?
Yes — and file a fresh SH-13 alongside it. Treat them as a pair. Cancelling and appointing in one submission avoids any window where the folio has no nominee at all.
Does the existing nominee have to consent?
No. Nomination is entirely the holder's decision and can be changed at will. The nominee has no say and need not be informed, though telling them avoids awkwardness later.
What if the nominee has died before me?
File SH-14 to remove them and a fresh SH-13 to appoint someone else. If you do nothing, the folio effectively has no valid nominee.
How many times can I change a nomination?
As often as you like. There is no limit and no fee prescribed by SEBI, though some RTAs levy a small processing charge.
Is there a fee for SH-14?
There is no SEBI-prescribed fee. Individual RTAs may charge a nominal service amount — ask when you submit.
If I move my shares to demat, does the SH-14 still matter?
The physical folio's nomination does not automatically carry across to a demat account. Once dematerialised, nomination is governed by your depository participant's own record, so you should make a fresh nomination with your DP. People frequently assume it transfers and it does not.
Can a nominee refuse the shares after my death?
Yes. A nominee is entitled to claim but cannot be compelled to. If they decline, the shares fall to be dealt with under succession law and your legal heirs would claim through the transmission route instead.
Can ClaimMyFunds check who is nominated on my shares?
Yes. We can obtain the current nomination position from the Registrar for each folio and, where it is wrong or missing, prepare the SH-14 and fresh SH-13 together so there is never a gap.
