PAN-Aadhaar Linking: Why It Matters for Shareholders
PAN-Aadhaar linking is usually discussed as an income tax matter. For anyone holding shares, particularly in physical form, it has a second consequence that is rarely spelled out: an inoperative PAN can stall folio servicing and block an IEPF claim.
We at ClaimMyFunds see IEPF filings blocked by this more often than people expect, usually because an Aadhaar is linked to a mobile number the claimant stopped using years ago.
In short
If your PAN becomes inoperative because it is not linked to Aadhaar, it can fail verification at the RTA and prevent Aadhaar OTP e-signing on the MCA portal — which is how most people sign Form IEPF-5.
When This Applies to You
- You hold physical shares and have not linked PAN with Aadhaar
- You are about to file an IEPF claim
- The RTA has queried your PAN during a KYC update
- You plan to sign Form IEPF-5 using Aadhaar OTP rather than a digital signature
- Your Aadhaar is not linked to a mobile number you still use
Step by Step
Check the current status first
Verify on the Income Tax e-filing portal whether your PAN and Aadhaar are already linked. Many people are linked and do not realise it.
Confirm the details actually match
Name, date of birth and gender must agree across both records. A mismatch is the usual reason linking fails, and it must be corrected at the source before linking will work.
Complete the linking
Through the Income Tax e-filing portal. Where a fee applies for late linking, the portal will tell you and collect it.
Make sure Aadhaar has a live mobile number
Aadhaar OTP e-signing on the MCA portal sends the OTP to the mobile registered against Aadhaar. If that number is dead, update it at an Aadhaar centre before you try to file.
Then update the folio
Once PAN is operative, submit Form ISR-1 to the RTA so the folio carries the correct PAN.
What to Attach
- PAN card
- Aadhaar card
- A mobile number currently registered against Aadhaar
- Correction documents, if name or date of birth differs between the two
Where to Send It
Linking is done on the Income Tax e-filing portal, not through the RTA. The RTA only needs the PAN to be valid and operative when they verify it.

Why These Get Rejected
Across the files we handle at ClaimMyFunds, almost every returned form fails for one of these reasons.
How Long It Takes
Indicative timings from cases we have handled. The variable that matters most is whether the file is complete when it arrives.
| Stage | Typical | What affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Check current linking status | Same day | On the Income Tax e-filing portal. |
| Correct any name or date-of-birth mismatch | 1-4 weeks | This is the usual blocker, and it must be fixed at the source. |
| Complete the linking | Same day once details match | Processing is generally quick. |
| Update the folio with the RTA | 2-6 weeks | Through Form ISR-1, so the folio carries the correct PAN. |
What It Actually Costs
Indicative only. Stamp duty, notary rates and RTA service charges vary by state and by registrar, so treat these as what to budget for rather than a price list.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does PAN-Aadhaar linking affect an IEPF claim?
Form IEPF-5 must be signed, and most individual claimants use Aadhaar OTP e-signing rather than buying a digital signature certificate. That requires a working Aadhaar-mobile link and an operative PAN. Without both, you cannot sign, and an unsigned form cannot be submitted.
What happens to my shares if my PAN is inoperative?
Ownership is not affected. What suffers is servicing — KYC updates, transfers and claims can be held up where PAN verification fails.
My name differs slightly between PAN and Aadhaar. What do I do?
Correct one to match the other before attempting to link. Which to change depends on which matches your other records, particularly the name on the share certificate.
Is linking required for NRIs holding Indian shares?
The requirement depends on residential status and category, and the rules have been amended several times. Check your specific position on the Income Tax portal rather than assuming — the treatment of NRIs differs from resident individuals.
Do I need to inform the RTA after linking?
Yes, if the folio does not already carry your correct PAN. File Form ISR-1 so the RTA's record matches.
Can ClaimMyFunds help if my PAN is inoperative?
We cannot link your PAN for you, as that must be done on the Income Tax portal in your own name. What we do is identify the blocker before it derails a claim, tell you exactly what to correct, and handle the folio and IEPF work once it is resolved.
