Share Folio Frozen? Here Is How to Unfreeze It
If an RTA has told you your folio is frozen, or your service request has been refused pending KYC, the cause is almost always missing details on the folio rather than anything wrong with your holding. The shares are not lost.
A frozen folio is one of the more urgent problems clients bring to ClaimMyFunds, and the good news we give them is always the same: the shares are not lost, and this is reversible.
In short
A folio is restricted when required KYC details — PAN, contact details, bank account, signature or a nomination decision — are missing. Supplying the missing items through Form ISR-1 and any supporting forms restores normal service.
When This Applies to You
- The RTA has written saying your folio is frozen or on hold
- A transfer, transmission or duplicate request was refused pending KYC
- Dividends have stopped arriving with no corporate reason
- You cannot get a service request processed on an old folio
- You are mid-way through an IEPF claim and the RTA will not act
Step by Step
Find out exactly what is missing
Write to or call the RTA quoting the folio number and ask precisely which KYC elements are absent. Do not guess — supplying the wrong thing wastes a full cycle.
Complete Form ISR-1
This is the master KYC form and covers PAN, address, bank details, mobile and email in one submission.
Settle the nomination question
Attach Form SH-13 to nominate, or Form ISR-3 to opt out. One or the other is required; leaving it blank keeps the folio incomplete.
Deal with any signature mismatch
If your signature has changed since the 1990s, get Form ISR-2 attested by your bank and include it.
Attach clean supporting documents
Self-attested PAN and address proof for every holder, plus a cancelled cheque with your name printed on it.
Send it to the right place and keep proof
Everything goes to the RTA, not the company and not SEBI. Send by registered or speed post and keep the tracking receipt.
Follow up after three to four weeks
Quote the folio number and the dispatch date. Politely persistent follow-up is what actually moves these files.
What to Attach
- Completed Form ISR-1
- Form SH-13 or Form ISR-3 for the nomination decision
- Form ISR-2 where there is a signature mismatch
- Self-attested PAN of every holder
- Address proof matching the address written on the form
- Cancelled cheque with the holder's name printed, or a bank-attested statement
Where to Send It
All of it goes to the company's RTA. Send by tracked post — a frozen-folio file with no proof of dispatch is very hard to chase.

Why These Get Rejected
Across the files we handle at ClaimMyFunds, almost every returned form fails for one of these reasons.
How Long It Takes
Indicative timings from cases we have handled. The variable that matters most is whether the file is complete when it arrives.
| Stage | Typical | What affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Establish exactly what is missing | 1-2 weeks | Ask the RTA directly rather than guessing. |
| Assemble the complete set | 1-2 weeks | One submission, not several. |
| RTA processes the update | 2-6 weeks | Assuming nothing is queried. |
| Folio operational again | 4-10 weeks total | Longer if items were sent piecemeal, because each part restarts the queue. |
What It Actually Costs
Indicative only. Stamp duty, notary rates and RTA service charges vary by state and by registrar, so treat these as what to budget for rather than a price list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a frozen folio mean I have lost my shares?
No. Ownership is unaffected. What is blocked is servicing — transfers, transmission, duplicate issuance and in some cases dividend payment. Completing the missing KYC restores normal operation.
How long does unfreezing take once I send everything?
Where the submission is complete and clean, commonly two to six weeks. Incomplete submissions can drag on for months because each query resets the cycle.
Can I still sell shares in a frozen folio?
Not in practice. You would first need to dematerialise, and the RTA will generally not process a demat request on a folio with incomplete KYC. Resolve the KYC first.
The rules seem to keep changing. What applies right now?
SEBI has revised the KYC and folio-freezing requirements more than once, so confirm the current position with your RTA before filing. What has not changed is the underlying substance: a folio with no PAN, no bank details and no nomination decision will cause you problems whatever the prevailing rule says.
What if dividends were already missed while the folio was frozen?
Unpaid dividends can generally be revalidated and reissued by the company or RTA, provided they have not yet been transferred to IEPF. Ask for a revalidation at the same time as you fix the KYC.
Can ClaimMyFunds get my folio unfrozen?
Yes. Our first step is establishing precisely which KYC items are absent, because guessing wastes a full cycle. We then assemble one complete submission rather than sending documents piecemeal, which is what usually drags these cases out.
