Why shares become unclaimed
Unclaimed shares often happen because of address changes, lost certificates, missing folio records, family transitions, or long gaps in dividend tracking. In many cases, the investor or family knows the investment existed but cannot locate the paperwork needed to act on it.
What records can help
Useful starting points include old share certificates, dividend warrants, PAN-linked records, demat statements, registrar letters, bank papers, or company names remembered by the family. Even partial details can be enough to begin checking the current status of the holding.
How the next step is decided
Once the record is found, the recovery route depends on the case. Some investors need duplicate certificate support, some need demat conversion, and some cases turn into IEPF claim preparation or transmission for legal heirs.
